Sport Nutrition Workshop

Since health is fueled by what we eat and many people engaged in exercise have a basic understanding of what to eat but lack the knowledge how to turn it into practice, I show ways to actually prepare proper meals to maximize performance. This interactive workshop is designed for coaches, parents and athletes.

We will discuss the role of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals as well as water in sport and how proper timing can improve performance. Participants are invited to ask questions and discuss problems they experiences in the past.

I will show examples how to put the theory into practice and prepare meals. Workshops can be organized for athlete groups, teams. The information will vary according to the sport and participants. Sport nutrition hand outs will be provided for each participant. If you have a special request we can design a workshop to address this topic.

Topics include

•  Importance of healthy body weight and healthy eating
•  Eating to improve sports performance, diet for competitions
•  Fluid and hydration
•  Restaurants and eating on the road
•  Basic nutrition knowledge
•  Carbohydrate loading

Examples for workshops

•  Endurance sports
•  Team sports
•  Nutrition for runners
•  Nutrition for team handball
•  Nutrition for recreational athletes

Assessment of Body Composition

Physical activity and diet both influence our body composition, the amount of fat and fat-free mass. Body composition helps also to learn more about the athlete’s eating habits and if they are eating good or not. The start of physical activity can change our body composition and interestingly, there are also different typical body compositions for different sports. runners have a quite low fat mass but also only few muscle mass because they want to carry as little weight as possible around. Athletes in track and field such as javelin throw, will have more muscle mass and also more fat mass than marathoners.

Depending on the discipline, a certain amount fat mass or lean mass can help to improve performance. In endurance sports (running, cycling) little fat mass is advantageous, whereas in disciplines where you have to produce a high power output, high muscle mass is the goal.

Skinfolds are one way to determine one’s fat mass and body composition.
