Body composition assessment has become more popular among athletes. Also coaches and sport scientists have been using body composition to monitor their athletes. Nowadays we have several options to measure body composition. Athletes often get confused when they look at their results and see a completely different result compared to their last screening. The first question then is always: which method was used last time you had your body fat levels measured? It happens quite often that athletes then mention a different method. Reading through health and sport magazines, I usually find a lot of articles featuring new products on the market. Vitamins, minerals, superfoods, proteins and many other supplements which will help us perform better – according to the companies’ claims. Most of the time the claims are wrong, the evidence is missing and for me, who works in the sport nutrition field and promotes healthy eating, the question remains always: what about an athlete’s every day nutrition? Shouldn’t we first be looking at what athletes eat at home, how they shop, what they put into their shopping basket, if they have basic cooking skills before we talk about supplements?

The hour, it’s been many times that I thought about one hour in the last weeks. I just got home from a trip and don’t have a lot of time at home because tomorrow morning I’ll be on the way to Switzerland. This means I am going to leave again very soon. This time it is not going to be a race like many others. There will be just one rider, Rohan Dennis, and all will be fitted to him. He will do an hour record attempt on Feb 8 in Grenchen, Switzerland, and I will be there to support him as much as possible.

Das Konzept der Sportmedizin bedeutet nicht nur, dass Sportler bei spezialisierten Medizinern behandelt werden, sondern vor allem auch, dass sie präventiv behandelt werden. Da die Zahl jener Menschen in den letzten Jahren stetig zugenommen hat, die sich in Extremausdauer-Wettkämpfe stürzen und sich mit gleichgesinnten messen, sollten all diese SportlerInnen auch darauf hingewiesen werden, dass ein erster gesundheitlicher Check-up wichtig wäre. In manchen Ländern, wie beispielsweise Italien, für manche das Mutterland der Sportmedizin, ist so eine Untersuchung Voraussetzung und Bedingung für die Teilnahme an Wettkämpfen – auch im Breitensport. Wer bei der Anmeldung kein derartiges Attest vorweisen kann, wird vom Veranstalter nicht für den Wettkampf zugelassen. Dahinter steckt eine gewisse Absicherung der Veranstalter, es sollte aber auch den Sportlern selbst dienen, da sie gezwungen sind, ihren Körper überprüfen zu lassen, ob er für die bevorstehende Belastung überhaupt geeignet ist.
